ITSM/ITIL Service Asset Configuration Management (SACM) – What and Why

‘Service Asset Configuration Management’ is a mouthful, but the actual infrastructure of a configuration management system is not that complex. It is essentially a set of tools, such as databases and files, that collect, update, and analyze information about your configuration items. If integrated with other systems like change management and problem management, the system can also contain that data, such as a known error database. 

You may also hear of a configuration management database, which specifically stores configuration records. One, or several configuration management databases may be part of the overall configuration management system.

SACM Goals and Objectives

A key element of a strong SACM system is that it provides accurate configuration information. Documenting your organizational infrastructure ensures you have all that information on hand, keeping every other process effective. Change management, problem management, and other similar processes rely on the data from SACM. 

With SACM in place, those additional processes are supported through better decision making. It is easier for your organization to authorize changes, plan ahead, and fix any problems or issues knowing you have a repository of up to date, correct configuration details. 

It should also save you time and frustration, as well as money, by reducing the number of issues that stem from incorrect configurations. Poor configuration leads to quality and compliance issues, which can balloon into a major headache. Starting with SACM as your foundation keeps things correct from the beginning.

And, this system helps you look back at historical configuration information, which is valuable in many situations, such as investigating a persistent problem or keeping a baseline when implementing a change. If you need to revert to an earlier configuration for any reason, SACM keeps it simple — without it, reverting would be an almost impossible task, as you would have to do a lot of digging to figure out how it was versioned previously.

Configuration Control and Verification

Configuration control is important for security and stability. It ensures that only authorized users can add or modify configuration items within your system.

SACM is also used to report on, verify, and audit your configuration items, ensuring that the information in the database is accurate. It gives a good overview of how service assets and configuration items are being used and what value they offer to your organization and its goals. And, any time your organization updates a service or changes how an item is configured, that verification and auditing ensures that everything is in place as it should be, without having a negative impact on other systems, services, or items.
